I learned a lot when my mother filed for bankruptcy. It was a really hard time for the whole family but with the help of her attorney, we got through it and in the end, everything was alright. I want everyone who has to go through this process to have the best and easiest experience possible so here are my top tips for making it through the bankruptcy process happy, healthy and sane.
Choose a good lawyer.
You probably already knew you would have to choose a good lawyer. but what should you look for? I recommend going for a "popular" lawyer. Pick a lawyer who's known to be successful in your state or ask a friend who's gone through the process if they have any recommendations. If you're having a hard time, try doing an internet search, for example, try "georgia bankruptcy lawyers" or you can even be more specific, including your town, such as "atlanta bankruptcy attorney" which may bring up better results. You may also find articles and reviews written on lawyers in your state which will make it much easier to make the choice!
Stay calm.
When you or a family member is filing for bankruptcy, it can feel overwhelming, confusing and scary. Don't let yourself get freaked out! More people than you know file for bankruptcy, go through the process and end up happy and financially stable! Remember, it will be okay, you will be okay, everything will be okay.
Stay on track.
If you've worked with your attorney on a chapter 13 georgia plan, make sure you stick to it and stay on track. Don't go shopping and spend loads of money, don't go out to eat at fancy restaurants every night. Even though I encourage you to stay calm, you must remember that you do owe people money and you must repay them! Luckily, if you stay on track and do as you're told, you can work to pay off your debt!
I know filing for bankruptcy can be overwhelming but if you keep calm, stay on track and have a good attorney to back you up, the process can be quite smooth. Stay strong, do what you have to do and eliminate that debt!
