Ask the money chick: I can't stop spending!

I cant stop spending my money! I have bills to pay and I know it but I still cant help but buying things I dont need. Shoes, purses, jeans, you name it and Im buying it. What can I do to stop? Ive had to borrow money from my mom several times and I just cant keep doing it, I feel like Im stealing because I can never pay her back. HELP!

Hey Stacy,

First of all, I want to say that I know where you're coming from! I love to buy things too but you have to remember that the necessities need to come first. Here's my first tip - Hide your money from yourself. I don't know how you're purchasing (at the store, online, etc.) but if it's online, get rid of your Paypal account, credit card, whatever you can! If you're buying in store then avoid shopping altogether - You may say "Oh, I'm just going to look around" but if you're a serious spender, the temptation will most likely be too much.
If you're using a credit card, try to switch over to a checking account. Pay your rent and your bills for your necessities as soon as possible, if you have money left, pay back your mom! If you still have money left, then you can buy yourself a little something. If you don't, well then you're protected from spending money you don't have!
My final recommendation is that you shop cheaper - I can go to the thrift store and get a week's wardrobe for less than $25! Don't trip over the fact that the clothes are used - I've found some amazing things at thrift stores including name brands and pieces with $100 price tags still attached! Plus, you're just going to wash the clothes before you wear them anyway so it's not like you're going to be wearing any dirt, germs or sweat. By shopping cheaper you can still shop and get new stuff but you won't be spending as much money!
I hope you can work out your spending situation - if these tips don't help, you can always try therapy but I think you'll be fine if you just take control of the situation.

Thanks,

The Money Chick
