I grew up in a small house in Kentucky. My mother raised me, along with my sister and brother, all on her own. Between food, clothing, house payments and doctor bills, my mom was in way over her head! With only one income and 4 people to care for, the debt started piling up. The longer my mom waited to pay her bills, the more expensive they got! After a year of constant calls from debt collectors, my mom decided to file for bankruptcy.
At first, my mom was going to do it alone but she realized it was a very complicated process! She eventually hired an attorney to help her. He used to be a well-known attorney in Louisiana so she knew she could trust him! He made everything so much easier. He taught her the difference in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy, helped her choose between the two and then helped her lay out her debts and a plan to pay them back!
Filing for bankruptcy was hard for my mother - I think she was embarrassed that she had gotten herself into so much debt. However, her attorney was very understanding and he didn't look down on her. With each and every meeting, a tiny bit of weight seemed to be lifted from her shoulders.
The two of them came up with a payment plan that would work for my mom's income and she stuck to it! Within a few years, she had paid off 90% of her debts which meant no more phone calls, no more worrying about losing our home or car and overall, a happier household! My mom was happier because she didn't have the added stress of debt hanging over her head!
I was young when my mom filed for bankruptcy and to be honest, I can't even remember her attorney's name but I do remember everything he did to help my family through our tough time. Without him, I know the bankruptcy process would have been much harder for my mom and sometimes I wonder if she would have even made it through!
I am participating in a blogger campaign about bankruptcy by Bucks2Blog and was compensated. However, the views and opinions are my own.
